One year out

One year ago from today was a day unlike anything I've ever experienced. I felt emotions I've never felt before. It was a day I will never forget. It's been 365 days since I let the world know another part of who I am. A secret I had been holding onto for too long. That secret was that I'm a gay man.

I've been extremely blessed in life. I was fortunate to be brought into a happy and loving family. But at the same time, I've had such a challenging life. Growing up in the Mormon church, obviously there have been some conflicts with my sexuality. I tried to live in denial for as long as humanly possible. But it got to a point where my mind was too exhausted to function properly. I have one side of me telling me I'm gay and this is who I am, and another side of me telling me I can change and that being gay is wrong and being gay is a sin. Do you know what that does to a person? I do. It's called depression.

One of the hardest things for me in my life before I came out was being around friends, family, or random strangers, and hearing them bash on gay people. To hear their feelings about me was like a dull, rusty knife through my heart. I just want to let you all know now, that hearing those negative things left a deep permanent scar. So please be careful about the things you say about other people. You never know who will hear your words, and you never know how many hearts you'll break. Be kind. You may not understand why someone lives the way they do, or why someone likes the things they do. Just because someone likes or does something differently than you doesn't mean you can tear them down. I'll admit, I still struggle with this. There are people I just don't understand. Just today I was at the mall and I saw a guy wearing black leather pants, a netted tank top and a red feather boa. My immediate thought that passed through my mind was... "What a weirdo". But I immediately erased that thought and made a conscious decision to not judge the guy. Who am I to judge someone else for who they are and the way they dress? In fact, I told myself "Wow, that guy has awesome confidence to wear something like that in public. Good for him." Please make a change in the way you think. I am. Some people like Chinese food, some don't. Some people have brown hair, some don't. Some people have an interest in politics, some don't. Some people get up for work at 6:00 A.M., some don't. Some people are attracted to the opposite sex, some aren't. The point is, we are all different. We need to stop judging others because they don't live the same way as you do. Our beliefs should not divide us. I hope we can put our differences aside and live peacefully with one another.

It took me about 21 years to accept myself. It took another 3 years to fully accept myself. That's when I decided to come out to the rest of the world. For weeks before I came out, the thought of coming out kept coming to mind. But then I would immediately cast that thought out. What's going to happen to me? What's going to happen to my family? What are people going to think? These are questions I've had for years and years and years. When I was younger, I always imagined what it would be like to not have to hide. But I honestly never thought I would EVER get there. I envied those that were out and cringed at the thought of having to come out myself.

I thought and thought about how I wanted to come out and what the best way to handle it would be. I could tell people face to face, but that would be awkward for both me and the person I was telling. The last thing I wanted to do was to put someone in an uncomfortable position. Should I put it on Facebook? No, I thought. That seems a little weird to come out on a social networking site. But then I kept thinking about it, and it made the most sense to me. To let everyone know in one clean swoop was going to be the best choice. November 11th, 2009 I started writing my feelings. Those feelings ultimately turned into my coming out letter. As I sat there writing, it was pretty easy for me to do. My feelings have been so bubbled up at the surface for so long, they were able to boil over easily onto the computer screen. What wasn't easy was publishing those feelings to everyone. At the time I was living on a tiny rock out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Away from everybody. Isolated. I completed my letter but just sat on the couch in fear. I so badly wanted to hit "publish" and get it over with. I couldn't. I was terrified. I sat there staring at the screen. The letter was typed up and ready to go. I remember the sun was setting and I could see there was a beautiful Hawaiian sunset outside the shutters. My favorite thing in the world. As I sat there, literally shaking, Rusty was by my side letting me know how things will be ok. He was comforting me and telling me how much he loved me and that he would be there for me. At that time I honestly had no idea what relationships I would lose in my life. I thought by doing this it would be the end of many friendships. He talked to me for quite a while. Sharing his own experiences, and giving me words of love and encouragement. Finally, at 5:40 P.M. my time, I slowly dragged my cursor over the "publish" button... and clicked. My body went numb. I turned off my phone, closed my computer, and fell into Rusty's arms and sobbed. I cried harder than I think I've ever cried. The fear was so intense. I felt like it was a dream. My body felt like it was slowly lifting out of itself and hovered about 3 feet above me. The feeling was pretty indescribable. I laid there crying, not really knowing what to do or what to expect. The sky still pink and orange from the sunset... I remember feeling a feeling of inner peace. After I cried myself out, Rusty decided it would be best to get out of the house. He took me a mile down the street from our house to have dinner out on the patio at The St. Regis Hotel. It was the hardest but best night of my entire life.

When I returned home, fear immediately overcame me. I was now around my phone and laptop. I didn't want to look at my Facebook page or turn on my phone. I was fearing the worst. I put it off for a while, but couldn't take it any longer. When I logged onto my Facebook, I was so overcome with loving and supportive messages from so many people. I sat there reading the messages and cried. I instantly knew that coming out on Facebook, even though I had doubts about it, was the best decision for me. To see email after email of love was exactly what I needed. I still have those messages. And they mean the world to me.

There is so much I have been through. I have come a long way. It's been a rocky road, but I believe it's made me a stronger person. Life is difficult when you're constantly discriminated against. And for something you can't control. I want you to know that being gay IS NOT a choice. I'm tired of people saying you choose to be gay. You absolutely do not. Why would I choose a life that's extremely difficult? Why would I choose this life in which people discriminate you and don't give you equal rights? I chose to be gay as much as you chose to be tall, or short. Or male or female. God doesn't make mistakes. He didn't make a mistake when creating me. And he didn't make a mistake creating you. I want anyone who may be reading this who is struggling with this issue to know that you can talk to me without fear. I know how important it is to have someone in the same shoes to talk to. I have a great group of friends who helped me along the way and I'm very thankful for them. Just know that I'm here if you need me. And also know that things do get better. Despite what you're telling yourself. I wish I could go back to my teenage self and tell him things will be ok. Time heals all wounds.

I love you all. And thank you for loving me for who I am, and not what I am.

Happy FIRST Birthday, Navi!

Where has time gone? November 6th, 2008, one year ago today, my
beautiful Niece was born! It's been such an awesome first year with my
first Niece. She's happy, healthy, and AMAZING! It's been so great
having her in my life. I can't get enough of her. I'm SO sad I couldn't
be in Utah to celebrate with her today.

Navi, Happy Birthday. I hope you realize how much
your Uncle Tanner loves and cares about you!
You're so special to me. You've made everyone that knows
you a happier person. I'm sad I can't be with you today to

Firework insanity!

My favorite holiday is the 4th of July. Why? Because it takes place in the Summer, barbecues, watermelon, corn on the cob, and FIREWORKS! I love fireworks. The website that had this video had a comment about the fireworks in Valencia that I thought was hilarious... "You know how when you see a kid who can yo-yo really well? You kind of feel awed by him… his yo-yo’ing is sweet, it requires a lot of skill, and it’s something you don’t see every day. Still, you can’t shake the feeling that the kid is a freak. A weirdo. It’s simultaneous appreciation and alienation. That’s how I feel about Valencia and its obsession with fireworks."
When I came across this video I decided it's time to plan my trip to Valencia to witness this.

In less than 2 weeks, I will be living on Kauai! I decided I needed a change, and to get out of Utah. Nothing against Utah... I love it here. But experiencing life outside of the bubble is definitely a must. I've always wanted to live in Hawaii and figured this is the time. Sorry, Mom. I know you are the only one who doesn't want me to go... but it will be very good for me. I'm hoping it's going to be my time to grow, and focus on ME. I quit my job about 2 weeks ago, (best thing I've ever done) and am going to work in Kauai. There's a job offer that I'm considering right now. It's doing reservation sales for vacation condo rentals. The same condos I stayed in on my vacation back in July. They are really nice! When I get to Kauai, I'm meeting with the lady I would be working for to see if it's a good fit for me. I'm really excited, but really nervous at the same time.

Just to give you an idea of the scenery I'll be seeing everyday, I've posted a bunch of pictures. Just be sure to remember the cold weather that's heading to Utah... that makes the pictures even better. :)

where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life.

If you haven't seen Partly Cloudy, Pixar's new short that's shown before their new movie UP, you need to. It's genius, and hilarious. Their digital shorts are nothing short of amazing. If you aren't able to see UP for a while then I suggest buying Partly Cloudy on iTunes for $1.99. (If you like their other digital shorts, then I'm sure you'll love this one.) I thought it was very creative and very well done. Academy Award for best animated short film... I think it's coming.

Saturday after work, I decided to drive down to St. George for the remainder of the weekend to get a taste of Spring. All this snow has gotten to me and I decided even being down there for just ONE day with nice weather will be so worth it! Brandon, Robyn, Courtney and Navi were down there, as well as Marcie, Brian and Syd. Earlier in the week I told Courtney I was thinking about driving down after work and just staying through Monday morning, and then I told her I decided it was too long of a drive for such a short trip. So as far as they knew, I wasn't going to end up making it. Well I left my place around 6:00 P.M. and arrived just before 10:00. When I was heading to the condo I text Courtney to ask her how St. George was and what they were up to so I could sneak into the condo and surprise them if they weren't there. She told me they just got dinner and dessert from 25 Main and were now just getting stuff at the grocery store. When I heard this, I headed straight to the Albertsons by our condo because that's where I figured they would be. I walked past every aisle hoping to walk up behind them and surprise them... however, they were nowhere to be found. While I was searching the store my Mom called and asked how I was going to surprise them. She told me how Courtney rode down with Syd, Marcie, and Brian and surprised them by getting inside a black garbage bag and sitting in front of the door. Marcie called Robyn and told her that she had left a sack of stuff on the doorstep of things my Mom sent with Syd for our condo. She told Robyn she knocked but nobody answered. So Robyn went to the door and tried to pick the heavy bag up. She couldn't lift it so she then began to scoop it up [Courtney] from the bottom. Courtney then jumped out of the bag and scared Robyn to death.

So after leaving the grocery store I headed to the condo and used the spare key to get in. I was trying to think of what I could do to surprise them. I was thinking maybe just hide behind the couch and when they opened the door yell "SURPRISE!", but that was a boring idea. Then, something popped into my head. I'll make it look like someone broke in! I hid all their valuable items (Laptops, iPod, sunglasses...) and then began to place chairs, barstools, and tables on their sides. I threw DVD's and the couch pillows all over the floor, took off the lampshade and knocked over a few more things to make it look someone broke in. I watched out the front bedroom window for them to pull up. Once I saw them, I ran to open the back sliding glass door, and then hid behind the bed in the back bedroom. I heard them open the door and heard the fear in their voices. "Woah... what?" Then a couple seconds later Courtney yelled "It's Tanner!" That idea was shot down by Brandon and Robyn by them both saying someone had broken in. Their biggest concern was Navi of course. They wanted to get her out and back in the car until everything was figured out.

I was in the bedroom laughing to myself. Then I heard Brandon draw a knife from the kitchen drawer and then they went outside. When I heard that knife I'm glad I was in the spot I was because I was looking under the bed, watching for him so if he did start to come I could reveal myself before he threw a knife at me or something. That would have been bad. They were outside for a few minutes and I was waiting for someone to come back in, but they never did. At this point, I sent a Twitter message saying "I heard the condo got robbed!" Courtney then called me...

Court: "Are you in St. George?"
Me: [laughing] "GOTCHA!"
Court: "Tanner, we just called the cops!"
Me: [still laughing] "You did?! You better hurry and call them back!"

They came in and Courtney and Robyn said they were shaking. Robyn said this is the second time she's had anxiety down here. (The first time being when Courtney jumped out of the bag)
After they were no longer shaking they were able to have a good ol' laugh about it all. The best part is Courtney said the cops asked for my name. Is this going to go on my record or something? Ha ha. If it does... it was well worth it.

Here is the mess I left. I could have done sooo much more, but I had to remember I have to clean this up when I'm done. - (It doesn't show up as good on pictures. You had to be there)

Red dot award: design concept 2008, designed by Lee Sharsha. These days, with so many other things to think about, trying to keep track of food which only stays fresh for a certain number of days can be difficult. The Freshness Indicator changes colour to remind users of the use-by date.

The Freshness Indicator is made primarily of e-paper and is attached to a consumable product with a loop of elastic-like cord. The timer is pressed when the product is first bought, with the number of presses equalling how many days the product is expected to stay fresh. Five presses, for example, would equal five days. Over the course of those five days, the indicator changes from green to red, with green symbolising fresh and red symbolising expiry. This makes it very easy to see if a product is in danger of expiring, and also makes choosing which of any similar products should be consumed soonest if they have been bought at different times. As well as the day-counting function of the Freshness Indicator button, the cord length can be adjusted and locked so it can be fixed on food or food packaging (boxed, bagged or bottled).

I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer. I work at Home Depot and I told Sarah how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had. Then I found one more in the back room, and several people were fighting over who would get it. Sarah's picture does NOT show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot. From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.

Foggy Friday

Driving home from work on the freeway, I see a caution sign that says "Caution: Fog ahead. 2 Miles."

I've seen these warnings before and it usually turns out to be nothing. To my pleasant surprise... it was thick fog! Even though I sometimes start to feel a little claustrophobic, I still love the fog! Why can't it be foggy more often??

So one of my goals for 2009 is to read more. I need suggestions for good books to read. I want to read at least 1 book per month. Not a huge goal, but it's better than nothing!

This month, I have been reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I'm almost done. It's a very interesting book. I have really liked it. Especially shooting down the theory of "If you go to college and get good grades, you'll get a good job and be secure." I'm not saying education is not important, because it is. I just think the whole idea of having to have a degree to get anywhere in life is not really true.

Next month, I'm planning on reading Force of Nature, by Laird Hamilton.

CRAZY busy

Yesterday at work was the busiest day I've seen. We had over 100 faxes waiting to be processed at any given time throughout the day. Getting closer and closer to Christmas, it's just going to get crazier. I got to work today and it was much slower. I got a couple of emails from one of my supervisors. It made me feel good and thought I would just share.

"Thank you everybody for stepping up yesterday on probably one of the biggest days we have ever seen. 1,153 faxes came in yesterday, 1,472 phone calls. Call center, you did a great job handling the calls coming in at an average of 163 calls an hour. Also, thank you to those that dropped what you were doing to help with the faxes and phone calls. It was a great team effort by all. At 6 p.m. there was still 120 faxes in the queue but thanks to Felicia, Jacquie, Jessica, Tanner, Pam and Ashley Alexander who all stayed until after 8 pm and brought it down to 12 to make sure we didn’t start today off in the hole, THANK YOU!"

I just wanted to thank you guys for staying late and getting the applications cleared out. You both cleaned house with the amount of apps you processed. I attached an activity report from yesterday if you are interested. This report tells you what accounts you worked on and what you did with them. Jess you processed 211 different customers, Tanner 169. These are big numbers, THANK YOU for your efforts it made a huge difference."

Jess was at work for 10 hours and I was there only 8. I'm still part time with school. We (and a couple others) stayed until 8:30 to get everything done. It was exhausting. Keep in mind that just a couple months ago, I would average about 40 applications in a days time. so 169 is INSANE!

I just have to keep reminding myself of the commission from all of these applications and the Christmas bonus next month!

Dubai is INSANE!

Look at these amazing projects and future projects I've been reading about. Crazy! I want to go!

BURJ DUBAI -

Burj Dubai is still under construction. It was started in 2004 and is scheduled to be finished in September 2009. In April 2007, Burj Dubai reached 1,553 feet, moving it past Taiwan's Taipei 101 tower to become the tallest building in the world. In April 2008, Burj Dubai became the tallest man-made structure on Earth when Emaar announced that it was higher than the 2,063-foot KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota. Burj Dubai was supposed to be completed by the end of 2008, but in June, Emaar said that "finishing touches" had delayed finishing the project until next year. Many of Dubai's building projects are facing delays because all the construction going on there has resulted in shortages of skilled labor and building materials. Emaar is keeping Burj Dubai's eventual height a closely-guarded secret, but speculation is that it will end up at 900 meters, which is equivalent to 2,953 feet.

ANARA TOWER -

This one is dubbed the Anara Tower, and while it's not going to be the tallest in the world (it'll be about 500 feet shorter than the Burj Dubai at 2,150 feet), it's still incredible all on its own.
The defining element of the Anara Tower has got to be the massive propeller-like structure at the very top, at the center of which will be a glass-ceiling hub containing one of the world's most luxe restaurants.

In the tower itself there will be 300 insanely-expensive apartments, a 250-room luxury hotel and gardens every 27 floors. Construction is due to start by the end of next year.

DUBAI TOWERS -

Imagine having a candlelit dinner in the shadows of a structure that replicates the wavering flames itself. Now hold that thought till 2011. Located in Dubai, UAE, the Dubai Towers are being built as a special spectacle for the night. These towers are four in number and are modeled to reflect the movement of candlelight. The Dubai Towers rise 400, 330, 310 and 240 meters above the ground level. They twist, turn, wave, taper and do every imaginable thing to stay true to their inspiration. Designed by Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates, these towers are being built on a development called The Lagoons, and will be ready in mid-2010. The towers will contain numerous apartments, spas, hotels, gyms, spas, and any other luxury establishment imaginable. All these will be located on the floors which vary from 57 to 94 in number as per the varying dimensions of the towers.

THE WORLD -

The same company that brought us The Palm Islands, Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp), have done it again expanding their portfolio of man-made islands with this latest Dubai island project shaped like the continents of the world. The World will consist of between 250 to 300 smaller private artifical islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. The development is to cover an area of 9 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine transport.

THE BURJ AL-ARAB -

The Burj al Alam, or The World Tower . Upon completion it will rank as the world’s highest hotel. It is expected to be finished by 2009. At 480 meters it will only be 28 meters shorter than the Taipei 101.

THE BURJ AL-ARAB HOTEL -

Currently the world's tallest hotel Considered the only '7 star' hotel and the most luxurious hotel in the world. It stands on an artificial island in the Sea.

HYDROPOLIS -

Hydropolis, the world’s first underwater hotel. Entirely built in Germany and then assembled in Dubai , it is scheduled to be completed by 2009 after many delays.

The Trump International Hotel & Tower, which will be the centerpiece of one of the palm islands, The Palm Jumeirah.

So for the past couple weeks, my phone has had a really hard time adjusting to the cold weather. It has slowly been dying. Yesterday it got out of hand. The only way I was able to use my phone is if I had it up to the heater in my car, rub it on my pants to heat it up by friction, or to blow dry it. Ridiculous.

The bottom half of my phone is a touch screen that you have to touch to be able to access your contacts, to text, and to do anything else besides pushing the buttons to call someone. Which is useless because who knows phone numbers anymore. They were all saved in my phone. It drove me crazy all day at work... Robyn's last day of work might I add. You will be missed. :( So when I got done working I headed straight to Verizon. To my surprise they gave me a brand new phone and was out the door in less than 10 minutes. If only I had gone sooner!

So I'm very happy with my brand new phone. No scratches, works in the cold, doesn't have a delay after I push my buttons like my last phone did. Gotta love a fresh cell phone! The only down side was that for some reason, they weren't able to transfer my phone numbers to the new phone. It wasn't working. So I have no phone numbers! Text me your number! 703-4146.

So last Saturday I did something I never thought I would. I tried SUSHI. I was scared to death because I hate fish. I hate raw meat. I was scared I would throw up in the middle of the restaurant in front of all of the sushi regulars.

I tried 2 different kinds. I can't remember what they were or what was in them. That was kept secret so I didn't back out of it. You're supposed to eat the entire thing at once, but I had to do a small bite just to test it out. It didn't taste TOO bad. So I put the rest of the hunk of the rice, raw meat, and whatever else into my mouth. Not the best idea. It took me a while to get it down. I chewed and chewed trying to keep it in my mouth. When it comes to food, if it has a weird or different texture that what I'm familiar with, it's a challenge. I finally got it down. Again, it wasn't BAD. Just new and something I definitely wasn't used to.

The next one had raw tuna in it? Maybe avocado too? It all happened so fast. I don't remember! It was better than the first one. This one I ate in small bites. Will I eat it again? Maybe. I was told that the next time I have it I should have the cooked chicken sushi kind they have at Happy Sumo. I like the sound of that better.

I was proud of myself. I'm glad I was pushed to try it!

Fall TV megapost!

The only reason I look forward to Fall, besides cold weather, rain, and school, is plopping down in front of the TV and enjoying some good entertainment. Most people say they hate watching TV, when it's really not true. I on the other hand, hate it. Just kidding. So many TV shows are so action packed and well done it's just like going to the movies. Only you can lay around in your PJ's while you watch on the comfort of your own couch. The new Fall shows have already started Premiering. I thought I would pass on some of my favorite shows and let you know what you're missing out on. And also, let you know what shows I'm most looking forward to!

What's on NOW!

"America’s Toughest Jobs" is a new extreme competition series that will test 13 men and women who venture out of their safe and comfortable careers and are injected into some of the most challenging, dangerous and demanding jobs on earth.

I can't WAIT for this show! I have been waiting so long for Molly Shannon to come star in her own sitcom and now it's here! So excited to see how this one turns out! It looks hilarious.

"Kath & Kim," a series adapted from Australia's hit comedy of the same title, is a look into the minutiae of middle-class suburbia that digs deep into the daily lives of mother and daughter, Kath and Kim. Kath Day (Shannon) is the mom, a foxy, 40-something divorcee who finally has time for herself and her valiant search for love. Kim Day (Blair) is the daughter, a self-absorbed princess recently separated from her husband who finds consolation in stuffing her face. When Kim decides to move back home, Kath reluctantly agrees - but to Kim's chagrin, Kath is not about to cater to her every whim as she has in the past.

The new season is going to be interesting. Changes are in store. All new audition cities, including Salt Lake! I have been wanting American Idol to come to Salt Lake for auditions because I know there will be some great talent! Utah is definitely underestimated. Of course after David Archuleta, they HAD to come to Salt Lake. The new season is also welcoming a 4th judge. Kara DioGuardi. I don't know much about her... but I've heard she's the female version of Simon. Speaks the truth. That should be good!

Remember Nick Zitzmann? He was from Salt Lake. Hopefully we find more great talent like him!

So I Think I Got Addicted

I NEVER thought it would happen. I have hated dance shows since they started. I will admit... yes. I love this show. I've grown up going to Courtney and Amy's dance performances and just dreading them. Earlier this year however, I was flipping through the channels and I somehow landed on a show called "America's Best Dance Crew" and happened to see a craaazy good performance and from that point I was hooked. So when So You Think You Can Dance started, I was excited for it. I've found the only dances I like are mainly the Jazz and Hip Hop routines. I have to say... it still makes me uncomfortable watching a guy dance ballet. Not for me, thanks.

With the finale of So You Think You Can Dance I thought I'd post my top 5 favorite performances of the season. Awesomeness.

Waking up this morning to a cloudy sky I was a little worried about how the weather was going to turn out. The weather turned out perfect. Such a great night. I have been sooo excited for this concert. I got the concert ticket from my roomies for my birthday.

The concert was great! Colbie Caillat and John Mayer were both excellent. John Mayer is a little weird when he talks though. He says really weird things like "The internet doesn't exist. It's not real..." I didn't get it. Maybe he should just stick to singing.

Rusty Andrade is one of the most giving people I know. He does so much for other people. So caring and selfless. He recently informed me about an incredible website that lets you help struggling people around the world by donating money to help them live better lives. They are entrepreneurs trying to get their businesses going so they can make a decent life for themselves, or just a struggling family in need of help. That's where WE come in. You browse through the people listed and can read their stories and why they requested a loan. You can search by specific categories like: Food, clothing, construction, housing, transportation... etc. Rusty bought $25 gift certificates and gave them out to friends and family as gifts so that they could help change a life. One of the best gifts you can give if you ask me! I'm so thankful he gave me $50 to donate. It was so great, but so sad to read through the people and try to find who to donate the money to. There are so many people in need and I wish I could help them all. I came across 2 people that stuck in my mind.

The first was José Del Carmen Mejía.

Jose works for a company that distributes water to all parts of Nicaragua. He's a pump operator. He's worked for the company for 17 years and sometimes works seven days a week. His goal when he started his job was to be able to lift up his family, to provide them with food, education and housing. He has two young children. Work on his house has moved along slowly, always depending on what money he brought in. Jose's next step is to continue the construction of a bedroom so that he can make his two young children more comfortable. That's why he's asking for the loan, to buy the materials he needs for construction.

When I thought about his 2 children I felt so heartbroken. We seriously take advantage of the way we live. We are sooo lucky to live the way we did. It made me think of one of the areas of my mission that was just outside of the city of Chihuahua. We went to visit some people and we walked up over this hill and what I saw made my heart break. It was miles upon miles of the poorest living conditions I've ever seen. Tin houses, houses that had cardboard for walls and roofs, houses held together with twine and wire. Awful. I feel so guilty living in my air-conditioned house with running water and get to fall asleep on my soft queen sized bed.

The second profile I came across was Jose Luis Arriola Hernandez.

"I have a plot of land that has some construction work on it, but I need to build a room on it because my wife and I are currently living in an old, broken down bus. We do not have any children because of our current living conditions. I am requesting a loan of $800.00 USD in order to obtain at least a safe and steadier roof over our heads so we can sleep."

Again... how can I not donate to help someone build themselves a home and get out of that broken down bus! I couldn't pass that up.

I have constantly told people that I wish Molly Shannon would come out with her own sitcom. Well my friends, it's happening! This Fall Molly Shannon will star in a show along with Selma Blair called "Kath and Kim". It's a series adapted from Australia's hit comedy of the same title, is a look into the minutiae of middle-class suburbia that digs deep into the daily lives of Kath, a cheerful, forty-something divorcee, and her self-absorbed daughter, Kim. It's the love and hate, push and pull, of the dysfunctional relationship only a mother and daughter could share. I'm SO excited for this show! Who wants to come to a premier party??

The Office Spinoff

I was online reading up on the Fall TV schedule to see what's new and I came across this news. Not sure how much I like the idea... We'll see how it is.

"Spinoffs are a risky business. When you take a popular character from an ensemble cast and plop him or her into a starring vehicle, the end result is usually mediocre (Private Practice), if not downright awful (Joey). It’s only once in a blue moon that you get one that is truly successful, like Frasier. It is for this reason that at first glance, the just-confirmed spinoff of The Office may seem like a bad idea. Luckily though, the upcoming NBC comedy has a couple of really positive factors working in its favor.

First off, if earlier reports are to be believed, no one from the current cast will be on the new show. That means we won’t get a sitcom about Toby and his wacky hijinks with his ex-wife, or a behind-the-scenes look at Kevin’s Scrantonicity nationwide tour. Secondly, the writers and producers behind The Office have already pulled off one dramatic feat: they took a beloved, award-winning British comedy and adapted it for American audiences in a way that made it as good, if not better, than the original. It’s something that people, especially those who remembered NBC’s failed attempt at adapting Coupling, didn’t think could be done.

While the official announcement about the spinoff won’t come until NBC’s upfronts, the show is expected to be introduced via a special episode of The Office that will serve as a backdoor pilot. The new series is scheduled to be a mid-season replacement that will premiere after the Super Bowl on February 1st. It will then air Thursday nights after The Office."

I thought she might be talking about 24 because I've heard they are in the process of getting that together. "What show?" I asked her. The next word that came out of her mouth gave me chills. "Friends!" She said. Anyone that knows me well knows that I'm a Friends fanatic!

I'm guessing since the huge success of the Sex and the City movie, and the actors not really finding success as big as they did with Friends, it made sense to do a Friends movie. Supposedly Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer are on board for the movie already. There is talk that the other actors would most likely get on board as well. They are rumored to get and estimated $19 million each for making the movie.

I hate to get my hopes up because I've heard reports that executives are denying the Friends movie rumors. But at the same time, the rumors that it WILL happen are spreading like crazy. Let's just hope it will happen. It would be a HUGE success if they did it!

PBJCP Sandwich?

A couple months ago my friend Miles asked if I would try his sandwich.

ME: "What kind is it?"
HIM: "Just try it."
ME: "What kind is it?!"
HIM: "Peanut butter and jelly... and cheese puffs."
ME: *blank stare*
HIM: "It's good! Just try it."

Needless to say, I didn't try it the first time he offered. He made it again a while later and got me to try it. I was expecting it to be disgusting. I took a bite and was actually surprised. It wasn't bad. It tastes like a normal PB & J but with a crunch. You know how you add potato chips to sandwiches? Same thing. I was thinking you'd be able to taste the cheese but you can't at all. It's quite tasty. Sounds weird, I know. But try it if you dare!

Jack Johnson is undoubtedly one of the greatest singers to chill out to during the Summer. If you ask anyone (in our family at least) "Where is the best places to listen to Jack Johnson?" The answer without a doubt would be "On a boat in Lake Powell!" I love listening to Jack Johnson after a stressful day, a hot day, driving in my car, when I'm working out, on a nice run. Anytime!

Every Jack Johnson album is flawless. None of his songs are bad. None. It's hard to pick a favorite cd because the more and more you listen to a certain one, it starts to become your favorite! At this moment exactly 1 year ago, Courtney and I were 1 hour and 52 minutes from landing in Honolulu. I can't believe it has been a whole year. It was such a great experience! I remember feeling such anxiety before we were landed. I didn't know what to expect. We hadn't met Kali or her Sterling (The couple we stayed with.), didn't know where we'd be staying or know what their house was like, didn't know how to get around. Everything turned out great. It was so great to get away and relax. It's just what I needed. Ashley and Karli came out a couple weeks later and stayed the last 2 weeks. It was so much fun to be there with them!

We stayed on the North Shore of Oahu. We stayed just a few miles East of Laie in a city called Hau'ula. The house was right across the street from the ocean! It was incredible! I miss it and want to go back! I miss my super blond, long out of control hair and tan skin. I miss the humid air that smells like flowers and salt water. I keep thinking about things I can do to get me to move back, but for longer than a month. It's such a different lifestyle over there. There just seems to be less stress! I hope I can go back soon. I'm so jealous of Courtney... she leaves in a week and a half to go be an EFY counselor at BYU Hawaii. Have a blast Court!

Millcreek Canyon run

Today when I left from work, I stepped outside and the weather was amazing. I decided it was a great night for a run. I have really been slacking when it comes to working out and I decided it's time to get back into the swing of things. I headed home and threw on some running clothes, slid on my shoes, stretched for a good five minutes. You always want to be sure to stretch before working out! Ok... I stretched for like 26 seconds. But it was better than nothing. OK! I realize that 26 seconds of stretching is like doing nothing. Anyway, I headed to Millcreek Canyon. (Avoiding I-80 of course) It's such a MESS right now! Every road around my house is under construction. I swear, all of the freeway entrances and exits open and close so often I never know what exit I can take to get home! I headed East up 3900 S. to Wasatch and proceeded up Millcreek Canyon. I was just going to park my car at the bottom of the canyon and run up so I didn't have to pay, but there were too many cars off the side of the road so I just went up. I parked a little below Log Haven and ran up the canyon. I saw people cooking their dinners and roasting marshmallows over their fires. It really made me want to go camping! It's beautiful up there! Perfect place to go running because the temperature is cooler and you've got great scenery! The mountains, the trees, the stream flowing right next to you... It was perfect.

I have been waiting for news about the iPhone moving to other carriers, but unfortunately I haven't heard a for sure thing. They have an exclusive contract with AT&T for 2 years but there have been rumors that they will branch out to other networks sometime this year. I'm with Verizon and have not been wanting to switch over to AT&T but I don't think I can wait any longer! I've been wanting it since they announced it back in January or February of '07. So I think when the new model comes out next month I'll make the switch!

A perfect Summer night

Last night fits into the category of the perfect Summer night. It started off with a delicious dinner. Nothing says Summer more than a BBQ. Grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken. My favorite! Served with chips, pasta salad, and watermelon. The only thing you could add would be corn on the cob. (Which I cannot wait for!) I was so excited that the weather is finally nice enough to be able to eat outside on the patio. It was so nice! The leaves are out, the grass is green, the stream was running. It was great. After Dinner we brought blankets out to lay on the grass. It was so nice I fell asleep. The sound of the running water really helps you to fall asleep!

The night ended with a walk through the neighborhood. Everyone went (including Roxy) but Courtney because she wasn't feeling good. She was passed out on the couch. (Feel better Court!) Roxy was so excited to be out on a walk, but not very happy about being on a leash. She kept pulling whoever was walking her. She would make funny grunting noises because her leash was choking her, but she didn't mind. Robyn's new favorite thing is Roxy on a leash! Ha ha.

The weather was perfect. It was nice and warm. We got up to the top part of the neighborhood and decided to go on this trail that leads up to the shoreline trail. We walked by a few nice houses and admired the yards, and the views. We live in such a beautiful state! We walked up the trail for a bit and watched the sunset. The sun was so red! (You can't even tell in the picture.) There was smoke in the valley so it made the sunset really bright! I loved it. You know how much I love sunsets. They are one of my favorite things! It was the perfect ending to a great Sunday night. It really got me excited for Summer. Hiking, great weather, barbecues, being outdoors... Can't wait!

Last weekend my friends were making dinner and they needed a certain spice for the recipe so we went to this Asian market on 900 South. I found these really cool drinks while I was there. I had never seen a drink like it before. The bottom was like a bottle of water and the top was like a pop can. I got the Lychee flavor and it is delicious. I highly recommend you try it!

Today I signed up for the St. George marathon AND The Lotoja! I don't know which one I want to do! Both are extremely challenging but I've always wanted to do something like it! The thing is... It's not a guaranteed thing. They are both based on a lottery system. So we'll see if I even make one. I'll let you know! Every year, I seem to forget that it's April fools. I'm actually well aware... but forget 12 different times throughout the day. I guess I'm that way because I have never been a jokester. Well Courtney got me good. She recently got a really nice camera from my dad. Well she called me, SOBBING! "Tanner, I don't know what to do!" "What happened?!?" I asked. I thought she hit some pedestrian or something! "My camera got stolen!" She cried. "How? Where was your camera?" I asked her. "It was in my car while I was at work. I was going to go take pictures when I was done." Well the crying sold the story, the fact that she would leave it in her car confirmed it. I totally bought it. I go on and on with all these helpful ideas about what she could do to track the camera down. I just felt so bad for her! That would definately suck! She continues crying and sniffling and then says "I don't know what to tell dad... Maybe I'll tell him APRIL FOOLS!"

Courtney has always been one to celebrate EVERY sort of holiday and usually goes all out. This was just another classic case of Courtney and her holiday fun. Well done Court! I give that performance a 10 out of 10!
